We present a new access control mechanism for P2P networks with distributed enforcement, called P2P Access Control System (PACS). PACS enforces powerful access control models like RBAC with administrative delegation inside a P2P network in a pure P2P manner, which is not possible in any of the currently used P2P access control mechanisms. PACS uses client-side enforcement to support the replication of confidential data. To avoid a single point of failure at the time of privilege enforcement, we use threshold cryptography to distribute the enforcement among the participants. Our analysis of the expected number of messages and the computational effort needed in PACS shows that its increased flexibility comes with an acceptable additional overhead.

The emerging area of business process intelligence attempts to enhance the analytical capabilities of business process management systems by employing data warehousing and mining technologies. This paper presents an approach to re-engineering the business process modeling in conformity with the multidimensional data model. Since the business process and the multidimensional model are driven by rather different objectives and assumptions, there is no straightforward solution to converging these models. Our case study is concerned with Surgical Process Modeling which is a new and promising subdomain of business process modeling. We formulate the requirements of an adequate multidimensional presentation of process data, introduce the necessary model extensions and propose the structure of the data cubes resulting from applying vertical decomposition into flow objects, such as events and activities, and from the dimensional decomposition according to the factual perspectives, such as function, organization, and operation. The feasibility of the presented approach is exemplified by demonstrating how the resulting multidimensional views of surgical workflows enable various perspectives on the data and build a basis for supporting a wide range of analytical queries of virtually arbitrary complexity.

Twitter's increasing popularity as a source of up to date news and information about current events has spawned a body of research on event detection techniques for social media data streams. Although all proposed approaches provide some evidence as to the quality of the detected events, none relate this task-based performance to their runtime performance in terms of processing speed or data throughput. In particular, neither a quantitative nor a comparative evaluation of these aspects has been performed to date. In this paper, we study the runtime and task-based performance of several state-of-the-art event detection techniques for Twitter. In order to reproducibly compare run-time performance, our approach is based on a general-purpose data stream management system, whereas task-based performance is automatically assessed based on a series of novel measures.

BaseX is an early adopter of the upcoming XQuery Full Text Recommendation. This paper presents some of the enhancements made to the XML database to fully support the language extensions. The system's data and index structures are described, and implementation details are given on the XQuery compiler, which supports sequential scanning, index-based, and hybrid processing of full-text queries. Experimental analysis and an insight into visual result presentation of query results conclude the presentation.

This work discusses the CROQUE approach to the maintenance problem for materialized views. In a CROQUE database, application-specified collections (type extents or classes) themselves need not be materialized. In exchange, the system maintains (redundant) views of the application data that help to minimize query response time. We understand views as functions of database objects and examine algebraic properties of these functions, in particular linearity, to derive incremental update plans. It turns out that it is feasible to employ ODMG OQL as a view definition language-instead of inventing a specialized one-in such an environment, since the majority of its clauses represent linear functions.
